Jozef Morgenstern–Moreň was commissioned as a professional officer in the Slovak Army in 1939. He held several primarily administrative posts; according to his superiors‘ evaluations, he was not well-suited for frontline command responsibilities. His career was aided by his proficiency in foreign languages. He participated in the defence of eastern Slovakia against Hungarian forces in March 1939, the campaign against Poland later that year, and the invasion of the Soviet Union in the summer of 1941. Due to his Jewish ancestry, he fell under the scrutiny of anti-Semitic racial regulations; classified as a „Jewish Mischling“ (of mixed Jewish descent), he was demoted and dismissed from the Slovak Army in 1943. After the war, he served in the Czechoslovak Army with the rank of infantry first lieutenant, which he had originally attained during his service in the Slovak Army.
