The present study aims to examine the activities of the 2nd (Intelligence) Department of the headquarters staff of I Corps in Prague, which, owing to its defined area of responsibility in the territory of southern and western Bohemia, occupied one of the key positions within the system of corps headquarters. In reconstructing its activities, we are aided not only by the substantial state of the source base, but also by the fact that, during its relatively brief yet intensive existence, a number of officers with diverse (and sometimes highly controversial) careers served there; in the period after 1945, and subsequently also following the February coup three years later, this led to their investigation. The analysis of surviving authentic materials originating from the activity of I Corps headquarters, supplemented by information from post-war interrogation protocols of persons involved, then helps us to gain insight into the wide spectrum of challenges that awaited intelligence officers of Prague I Corps during the complex 1930s.
