General Jozef Marko was among the key figures of the Slovak National Uprising and among the closest collaborators of General Ján Golian. From his actions, and from surviving materials, it is evident that he was a man and a soldier who upheld democratic values. This lifelong conviction led him during the World War 2 to engage in anti-fascist resistance and, after its conclusion, to adopt a negative attitude towards the Czechoslovak Communist Party and towards the Soviet Union’s imperialist behaviour – a militaristic communist great power whose interests Czechoslovak communists placed above those of their own country. The present study examines J. Marko’s service as Commander of Signals Troops and the initial phase of his criminalisation during the founding period of the Communist regime, when he spent months in investigative detention and ultimately, fortunately, received a relatively light sentence for acts he had not committed.
