In the study the authoress describes events so far insufficiently depicted by the Slovak historiography related to Slovak emigrants in Canada after the outbreak of the World War I. She follows destinies of these citizens who through no fault of their own were caught in an unenviable situation with regard to a change in mutual relations of Austro-Hungary and Canada when the monarchy got into a military coalition hostile towards Canada. The authoress describes various forms of discriminations related to the Slovak ethnic group in Canadian conditions. She deals with a description of the life in internment camps where first of all the reservists of the Austro-Hungarian army were taken in spite of the fact that most of them directly hated Austro-Hungary and where they were under a military control and regime and they were treated as prisoners of war.
