In this study, the author focuses on the ethnic composition of the commanding officers of the Czechoslovak armed forces immediately after the World War 2, which was a part of the process of creating the new constitutional relationships between the two autonomous nations. The author states that especially in the period of “restricted democracy” in 1945 – 1948, it became a politically sensitive issue which had to consider the existence of the Czech and Slovak national element or at least had to give such an impression. After 1945, the position of Slovaks in the CS armed forces was already being solved within the so called “Slovak Question”. Its solution was based on the programme commitment of the first postwar CS government, approved in Košice on 5 April. In the constitutional solving of the relations of the Czech and Slovak element, the Slovak legislative, governmental, and executive bodies should have been constituted, with the Slovak National Council (SNR) becoming the agency of the state of the Slovak nation. The study also deals with the question of respect towards the position of Czechs and Slovaks on an equal principle. The commitment was also reflected particularly into the task to provide for adequate representation of Slovaks in all central institutions of the military administration. The commitments were also reflected in the proclaimed full equality of the Slovak and Czech languages as the commanding and official languages as well as in unprecedented formation of the Slovak national units.
