Author of the study attempts to comparatively interpret several determinants of the political regime development in Slovakia and Romania in the period starting from 1938. In particular, he monitors how the domestic and foreign policy development in both countries was influenced by ultimate decisions of the Vienna arbitrations of November 1938 or August 1940. The common denominator here was the fact that both countries have lost a relatively large share of their integral territory (as a result of German pressure), in particular in favour of Hungary. In terms of heuristics, the paper is based on specialized literature of both domestic and foreign origin, in which the author is well oriented. The author correctly proves that the Vienna arbitrations had significantly determined the functioning of the existing regimes in both countries. Whereas the Ludak regime establishing in Slovakia (under the Hlinka’s Slovak People’s Party) was not harmed by the decision of the 1st Vienna Arbitration at all, in Romania the decision of the 2nd Vienna Arbitration of August 1940 caused the fall of the government and establishment of even stricter dictatorship with National Socialist features.
