During World War 1., in the fall of 1914 and spring of 1915, the Eastern front was also running through the territory of today’s Eastern Slovakia. The fights between Austro-Hungarian and the advancing Russian army required also evacuation of a part of local population and several destroyed municipalities, including Zborov. This was first occupied by Russian troops as soon as in November 1914, however, the Russians later retreated. For the second time, the Russian troops got there on 25 March 1915 and forced the Austro-Hungarian units to retreat. However, before retreating, the commander of the AustroHungarian 3rd corps, General Emil Colerus von Geldern, ordered to burn the village for tactical reasons. Several documents on this event are also found in the Military Archive in Vienna. In the first one, the Hungarian Prime Minister, Earl István Tisza expresses his interest in this event and investigation thereof and the other documents contain the statements of General Colerus and the command of the 3rd corps thereon.
