In the introduction of the published study, the author points out to the fact that the insignia of lay orders of the knighthood of all categories have not only been vested but also mutually exchanged since the half of the 14th century. Membership therein, manifested outwardly by wearing individual insignia and ceremonial robes, represented the highest level of connection of the selected persons with the governor in the function of the principal of the order. However, the membership of foreign knights, especially the monarchs in foreign orders, brought certain problems because it represented not only the military and political commitments sealed by the oath and a permanent public proclamation of alliance, but also formal subordination of one monarch towards the other. The study examines the issue of participation of the foreign monarchs in prestigious orders of the knighthood, the conditions, assumptions and means of mutual exchange of the insignia, preparedness of individual orders for foreign members as well as the disputable sections of their articles which often became the object of arguments, objections, dispensations and rarely even controversies and military conflicts.
