DANGL, Vojtech: Building Infantry of the Austro-Hungarian Army in the Last Decades before the Great War Outbreak.

Vojenská história, 19, 1, 2015, pp. 24-39.

In the opening of the study, the author states that infantry was the main striking force of ground forces of the European armies of the second half of 19th and early 20th century. This was in spite of the fact that the importance of artillery was growing quickly and great attention was traditionally also paid to cavalry, especially in Hungary. Apart from the Common Army (Kaiserliches und königliches gemeinsames Heer), Infantry was absolutely predominant even in the Hungarian home defence (Magyar királyi honvédség), Austrian home defence (Kaiserlich-königliches Landwehr) as well as militia of both parts of the Monarchy (Magyar királyi Népfelkelés and Kaiserlich-königliches Landsturm). In the next part, the Author details the primary significance of Infantry also in the first military service acts from late 1868. The military service act from 1889 partially took into account the new requirements for army modernization, especially in the field of increasing the number of new recruits as well as the military service acts adopted in 1912. These acts were aimed at preparing the armed forces for the imminent international conflict within the shortest possible time and to reduce the lagging in modernization of armed forces compared to other European powers. Uniformity of the army was also impeded by diverse national composition of the army.
