The study deals with the infl uence of World War 1 on the establishment of awards in phaleristic terms, i.e. wearable and non -transferable appreciation of merits in form of orders and medals. The author has divided the paper in four basic units by individual types of states (Central Powers, Entente Powers, neutral states and successor states), analyzing the system of awards in each of the countries before the outburst of World War 1 with focus on older awards also applicable during the War. Furthermore, he enlists all the awards established during the period of the war confl ict as well as awards established after the end thereof, having immediate relation thereto. In doing so, he focused his attention exclusively on the offi cial, state awards and did not deal with unoffi cial awards which had been largely founded mostly by various veteran associations or charitable institutions. The fi nal section of the study, having a summary character, also contains data about the quantities of several signifi cant awards granted.
