Without a doubt, the material and construction conditions are some of the basic aspects of smooth operation in every modern army. Within the wide range of objects, fortifi cations and areas administered by the army, the military barracks serving for accommodation and military training have become the basis of its construction fund. The study describes and clarifi es not only the architectural but also the historical and social development of these objects in the territory of today’s Slovakia, since their fi rst appearance during the ancient Roman Empire until the end of the World War 1 and the fall of the AustroHungarian Monarchy. The research defi nes the most important architectural signs and the breakthrough events defi ning their fi nal structural form, focusing on the period after the Austro-Hungarian Compromise and establishment of the dualist monarchy. Special attention is paid to the works and innovations of the military engineers who determined the basic spatial, technical and operational requirements of the barracks projection and construction, thanks to the intense international discourse. At the conclusion of the study, the great importance of the barracks in military history is also documented by the information about the number and intensity of the construction thereof in the last years before the outburst of the World War.
