The Home Army (Armia Krajowa) in Polish was the largest underground armed group in the territory of the occupied Poland during World War 2. In the summer of 1944, it had up to 400,000 members and belonged to the most influential organisations of this type in Europe. Its activity since 2000 is documented in the specialised museum in Krakow, the only one of its kind in the whole country. Today, the Museum preserves more than 8,000 collection items and the Museum Library has more than 11,500 books. The Museum owns a numerous collection of uniforms, headgear, helmets, military armament and equipment of the members of underground armed groups as well as their German and Soviet counterparts. Another group that is richly represented are the infantry firearms – pistols, repeating rifles, assault rifles, machine guns. Interesting part of the exhibition comprises the home-made explosives, pistols and machine guns used by the Polish mainly during the Warsaw Uprising. The permanent exposition of the Museum is extensive and displays the period of World War 2 in the occupied Polish territory very comprehensively and interactively at the same time. The Home Army Museum in Krakow interconnects the latest trends and principles of the museum work – high professionalism, interactive elements (film displays, audio recordings, possibility to touch the artefacts) and what is most important, the rare collection items are presented aesthetically and functionally in different ways.
