In May 1915, Italy declared war on Austria-Hungary and another front originated, the South-western or Italian front. It stretched along total length of more than 670 kilometres, with the most difficult battles taking place in its eastern part, the Isonzo front. This was located in the Isonzo river basin, 90 kilometres along the current Slovenian-Italian border. In 1915 – 1917, there were 12 large offensives in the Isonzo river basin, taking lives of more than 300,000 men of the Italian, Austro-Hungarian and German Army. After breaking the front at Kobarid, the fights moved to Italy, to the river of Piava, not to return to Isonzo again. To this day, the former battlefield is interwoven by many places of memory, commemorating the horrors of war even hundred years later. They are interconnected by the tourist trail titled Pot miru in Slovenian The Walk of Peace The trail includes the Military Museum in Kobarid, the Kolovrat openair museum, Church of Holy Spirit Javorca and the war cemetery in Loce, all of which are introduced in this contribution in detail.
