The author is a historian who has been systematically researching all parts of the history of Slovakia, particularly the Middle Ages, for more than half a century. In the current study, he undertook to research the history of the independent Principality of Nitra in the first third of the 9th century. It was based on the existing, albeit rigorous and content-oriented knowledge and opinions of previous historians, especially regarding the political development of this state. In his research, he used both direct and indirect sources as well as the knowledge of archaeologists, historians and philologists. His research interest focused not only on the political story of that state, on the change of religious affiliation from paganism to Christianity, but especially on the change of the old social structure of its inhabitants into a new form, namely a society of estates.
