The article deals with the military aspects of the first great siege of Constantinople in 626. Its second part draws attention to the various fortifications of the Byzantine capital including its first defensive line – the so-called Long Walls. Author of the study analyses the composition of military cadres involved in defense and their tactics. A great deal of his attention is drawn to previous attacks on Constantinople before the siege of 626.
