ČEPELA, Vladimír: Passion Calvary altar from Hronsky Beňadik in the light of the development of militaries.

The author in his article analyses a table Passion Calvary altar from Hronský Beňadik from the point of the armament military equipment/weapons and armour development in the first third of the 15th cent. He claims that the work, in 1427 created by a painter- Master Thomas de Coloswar; Transylvania, has got a decisive style connection with a Prague panel painting from a pre-hussits period. Th e altar was made as a request of Nicholas, from a Benedictines Closter in Hronský Beňadik, belongs to the most decisive landmarks of the international Gothic in Central Europe. It bears, at least, the same importance for the research of the military armaments in the current Slovakia and the Hungarian Monarchy as such. On the panel painting there are armed soldiers of the west possibly identified; based on their equipment; with the urban environment, or with the upper class, or the court. Th e armour is in its most decisive characteristics identical with the ones present in the current Czech and German picture sources. The cold weapons, captured on the panels of the altar, are the same as the weapons used at the time in central Europe. There is an interesting point to be mentioned here: the oldest iconographic record of an awl from Slovakia in its original form, also known from Czech archaeological finding. The shooting weapons are represented by a composite bow – a typical weapon of the Hungarian light cavalry and infantry.
