ČAPO, Matej: Events of the Franco-Austrian War of 1809 in Relation to Pressburg, as Recorded in the Diaries of Saxon Officers.
Autor: ČAPO, Matej
Following the Armistice of Znojmo, which concluded the combat operations of the Franco-Austrian War of 1809, the town of Pressburg (Prešporok, present-day Bratislava), its surroundings, and part of the territory of modern western Slovakia fell within the French side of the demarcation line until the final peace settlement was reached. Life in the occupied territory was influenced by the presence of occupation units, primarily from the IX Corps of the Grande Armée, which was composed of Napoleon’s Saxon allies. Information on this is provided by the diaries of several Saxon officers, held in the Sächsische Hauptstaatsarchiv Dresden (Saxon Main State Archive, Dresden), which have not yet been comprehensively examined by Slovak historiography. They were discovered by the researcher Jörg Titze and made available to the public in edited form within four separate publications. The purpose of this paper is to present an annotated Slovak translation of selected excerpts from these documents, relating to Pressburg and the territory of present-day Slovakia, covering the period from 13 July to 19 November 1809. In many respects, the diaries enhance our understanding of the events of 1809, particularly those relating to Pressburg. The documents illustrate daily military life in the occupied town and record several important events, such as the Austro-Saxon skirmish at Stupava, the celebration of Napoleon’s birthday, and Napoleon’s visit to Pressburg.
