JAVOR, Martin: American Slovaks of the First Catholic Slovak Union in the Battles of World War

Vojenská história, 1, 30, 2026, pp 7-23, Bratislava.

The participation of American Slovaks in Second World War operations remains an under-researched topic. This article discusses the wartime service of members of one of the largest Slovak-American fraternal organisations–the First Catholic Slovak Union–in the US Armed Forces during World War 2. It traces the fates of Union members from the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941 through the fighting in the Pacific in 1945. These are, in many cases, previously unknown stories of “our people” serving their new homeland. A portion of the article is devoted to the Union’s home-front contributions, including the purchase of war bonds and thefinancing of ambulances, aircraft, vehicles, and ships. The article is based on the archives of theFirst Catholic Union in North America and on the newspaper Jednota.

Keywords: American Slovaks; emigration; World War 2; Pacific War; Slovaks in the U.S. Army.
