The present study analyses the first two phases of the war over the Babenberg inheritance (1246–1261) as presented in the chronicle Liber Certarum Historiarum by John, abbot of Viktring. Despite its scope and high evidential value, this source has been used only marginally in Central European historiography. The aim of the study is, on the basis of a content analysis of the first four chapters of the first book of the work, to reconstruct the chronicler’s narrative and interpretative framework, to identify the legitimation strategy for the restoration of sovereign authority in the region, and to compare his account with the parallel Austrian annalistic tradition.
