he author has focused, in the study, on the analysis of foundation and organisational development of People’s Militia in Slovakia until mid 1960s. The study is based on the archival research of previously unavailable sources, especially materials of the former Presidency and Secretary of Central Committee of the Communist Party of Slovakia. It introduces new knowledge. It provides picture of number, organisation structure and functions of People’s Militia in Slovakia in the specified period. At tire same time, it pays attention to issues concerning the use of People’s Militia by governing groups in individual actions. It directs attention to issues concerning the co-operation of People’s Militia with the Army, Armed Forces of Security and Border and Internal Guards. It also mentions opinions that appeared in the first half of the 1960s concerning the end of „historic task“ of People’s Militia which prognosticated, in a certain way, a battle for their existence when a reform the communist system of society in Czechoslovakia was attempted.
