Halič became part of Austrian Monarchy in the second half of 18th century at the moment of dividing Polish kingdom among Russia, Prussia and Austria. The author pays considerable attention to greater particulars of historical development of the issue concerning Halič as an object of big-power and relating military concerns since the second half of 19th century. The core of the contribution is to outline military-strategic proposals, attempts and steps of the Austrian military command for the defence of Halič between the second half of 19th century and the breakout of World War I. The author points at the ever appearing dispute between what the Austrian strategist believed in and what the Habsburg monarchy was capable of doing for this kind of defence. The author indicates that Austria-Hungary did not manage to use Halič as front filed of Monarchy for military purposes. Ultimately, the land of Halič did not pay off to the Austrian Monarchy.
