anska Bystrica had a fortified city castle in the first half of the 14th century in the latest and there stood strongly fortified stone houses of a tower type, that protected critical access places. Building of the city fortification system did not continue fluently, continually, but in phases, depending upon the outer, predominantly military-political factors. Moreover, this phasing was limited particularly in the historically younger period by the financial possibilities of the city. A more systematic building of fortifications started after the Hussites invasion and the new phase of building the fortification structures dates back to the fall of Buda (Budapest) in 1541. At the end of the 16th Century, the whole circumference of Banská Bystrica was surrounded by city walls with bastions and gates. The city walls were mostly built of stones, the mounds and wooden palisades remained only at several shorter sectors. The accomplishment of the remaining small portion of the palisades reconstruction into stone walls was realised during the coming fourteen years. The Banská Bystrica fortification system had this shape until 1761, when its larger part was destroyed during a big fire in the city and it has never been restored in this shape.
