In the introduction the author outlines the genesis of the military oath term - as the vow of fidelity - from the time of ancient Rome. He refers to the fact that as the warfare developed it came to changes of the text, contents but also of the very course of the military oath taking ceremony. The paper gives the description of the oath of citizen militia in old Hungary in 1809, in Austrian and Hungarian Army in 1914, the oath of the Czecho-Slovak troops in Russia in 1917, the oath of the 1st Czecho-Slovak Brigade in France in 1918, the vow of the Czecho-Slovak Legions in Italy in 1918, the oath of the Czecho-Slovak troops in February 1919, the oath of the Czecho-Slovak troops in May 1919, the oath of Slovak soldiers on 15 March 1939, the oath of Slovak soldier in June 1939, the oath in March 1945, the vow of the Government Army members of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia on 8 March 1940, the guerilla oath in 1944, the military oath on 1 October 1950, the oath on I July 1960, the oath in April 1990, the oath on I January 1993 and the oath on 21 November 1997.
