The study deals with the partial problems of struggles at Eastern Carpathians -defence struggles of the army group of the North Ukrainian Armies in autumn 1944. The referred study brings to date not elaborated survey of tasks of German troops, way of their fulfilment as well as changes in the structure of troops taking part in their implementation. The study in brief and realistic way characterises the situation of German troops at the eastern front in that period. It continues by evaluating the situation of troops of the North Ukrainian Armies before the beginning of struggles at the Eastern Carpathians and pays due attention to the Slovak National Uprising.
