The study describes the battle for the important Bratislava bridgehead in French-Austrian war of 1809.

The struggles lasted from 1 June to 11 July. Unfinished bridgehead, all the time un-der the command of Major General Fridrich Bianchi withstood the attacks of Marshal Davout corps and then of Italian governor Eugene Beauharnaise. The bridgehead fate was sealed by the battle of Wagram (5 — 6 July) that the Austrians lost. Bianchi left the bridgehead just befo-re signing of cease-fire at night of 11 July. Then the occupation of Bratislava lasted from 14 July to 19 November 1809. Even Napoleon visited the town during this occupation on 31 August. For the first time the authors describe the military participation of Slovaks (in uniforms of Habsburg Army, mainly Hungarian infantry) in defence of the bridgehead in front of the town that was predestined for becoming the capital of Slovakia. It referred mainly to two battalions (1256 men) of 60th c. k. infantry regiment ,,Gyulai the men of which were the soldiers of Slovak nationality and some Slovak companies of 39th c. k. infantry regiment „Duka“. They struggled in the bridgehead from 29 May to 23 June 1809. They were very successful in the struggles during the strongest surge of French on 1 and 3 June.
