Published study deals with a long history phase from Austrian-Hungarian compensation to the origin of the Great War. The author has undertaken to gather up statistical data on the participation of the Slovaks in monarchy armed forces on the eve of the First World War. At the same moment he has decided to point out the most significant and distinctive elements determining the attitude of Slovak society to the army in examined period. In the part devoted to the question of national representation in officer corps of Austrian-Hungarian army, the author documents convincingly not only an absolute prevalence of professional officers with German mother tongue, but the lowest percentage representation of Slovaks among all monarchy nations as well. He points out the main causes of this state and dives deeper also into the military schools problems.
