In the published paper the author approaches the meaning of the term freemasonry, He deals with this topic concerning the Habsburg Monarchy in 18th century. He points out the fact that when following the membership base of Masonic lodges in this period senior representatives of these communities mostly came from officers’ layers. The author compares the activity of Masonic lodges in the territory of Bohemia, Moravia and finally in the territory of Hungary and states that in the territory of Hungary the Masons were not so active than in neighbouring countries. However, their results were remarkable anyway. He approaches the particular activity of lodges oriented in presentations on national economic and political issues. He explains the very importance of lodges for towns.
