KŠIŇAN, Michal: Milan Rastislav Štefánik and French Air Mission in Serbia.

Vojenská história, 10, 1, 2006, pp 46 – 56.

In his study the author results mainly from documents located in Service historique de l´armée de l´air (Military Aviation Archives) in v Château de Vincennes in Paris. At first the author describes Štefánik´s health problems and his secondment to aviation. He states that Štefánik started there as „a pupil – pilot“ and for rather short time he was promoted to the rank of second lieutenant. In addition of fulfilling the military aviation tasks he became a pioneer of military meteorology. Štefánik, however, soon started to develop also political activities that referred to his attempt to form a Slovak Squadron with enrolment of Czechs too. His later departure to Serbia was connected with his attempt to break up the combat morale of Slavs in ranks of Austro-Hungarian Army and to fulfil other political tasks too. Further the author outlines Štefánik´s subordination to Major Vitrait command, from whose report we hear about precious information on the activity of the French Air Mission in Serbia.
