On the background of the free royal city of Trenčín, in the times of the restless 17th century, when the determining events included especially estates’uprisings and religious riots, the study examines some of the major problems related with circumstances of the city captain elections,their position in the city administrationsystem,competencesandotherissues connected with their activity. He monitors the changes occurring in development of their powers over the said century, resulting not only from the internal requirements of Trenčín itself but also from external circumstances burdening the city. By detailed analysis of the used source materials, the author arrived at a conclusion that there were fundamental changes occurring since the 1670’s, when the people of Catholic confession were first time allowed to become city captains. In his analysis, the author attempted to sketch mutual bonds and relations between the city representatives as well as in the official hierarchy itself also using the comparative approach (in the footnotes, he successfully compares the data obtained by archival research with the data from other cities in the territory of today’s Slovakia, such asBratislava, Banská Bystrica, Modra etc.). The study is completed with tables of the city captains’overview.
