In September 1962 only a week after the death of imam Ahmad and the ascendancy of his son Badr, an armed revolt broke our in Yemen. A group of military officers led by Colonel cAbdalláh as-Sallál seized power in Sancá’ and proclaimed Yemen a republic. Elated, Egypt’s government hailed the new regime and assumed that Badr had been killed. In fact, he and his followers had fled to the hills, where monarchist tribesmen were ready to fight for their imam (who, as his title implies, was a religious as well as a political leader). They were backed by the Saudis, who feared a subversive revolutionary republic on their southern border. The civil war that started became a five-year bloody struggle.
