The subject of the study discusses the issue of the establishment and structure of Matthias Corvinus´s army belonging to armies with the highest combat effi ciency in Europe those days. Matthias started the establishment of the crossbowmen army early in his first years of reign, mainly aft er the agreement with Jan Jiskra (in the spring 1462) and aft er the battle at Veľké Kostoľany (January 30th 1467), when several Jiskras and „Bratric’s-Brothers“ soldiers entered into his mercenary army. A continuous increase from the current 6-8 thousand up to approximately 15-20 thousands permanent crossbowmen (with the monthly pay of 3-5 florens, resp. gulden per person) lead to systematic increase of taxes and almost each year an extraordinary military tax payment (a subsidy) at 1 floren (contemporary currency) per porta. At the end of Matthias reign it ate up around the half of the state budget. Within the historical awareness the mercenary army of the King Matthias is known as Th e Black army that was just the core of a permanent mercenary army.
