HURBANIČ, Martin: The historical background and causes of Avar´s atack upon Constatinople in 626.

Vojenská história, 3, 12, 2008, pp. 3 – 23.

The author focuses on the beginning of the 7th century, the period of Byzantine Empire facing dangerous attacks not only from the East (Persian Empire), but also from the North (Persian allies – the Avars). Meanwhile he refers to his two previous studies published in Military History (3/2007 and 1/2008). The main part of the study describes the foreign policy relations between Byzantine Empire and Persian Empire as well as the voyage of the Caesar Herakleitos towards Asia Minor. The conflict is being focused on in 2 thirds of his work in order to portray Avars’ involvement in the war and their actions within. Consecutively, he describes the diplomatic negotiations led by both the parties in order to take over the dangerous enemy. The conflict itself- the Siege of Constantinople in 626- is out of the focus.

Key words: Military History. Byzantine Empire. Avars. Constantinople. 626.
