The Middle East became heavily involved in the Second World War too. The German invasion of France, the entry of Italy into the war, and the capitulation of France, brought the war to the threshold of the Middle East. In these circumstances the Iraqi government refused to break off diplomatic relations with Italy and tried to get rid of British tutelage. The Iraqi government supported by the nationalist elements in the army refused to comply with British demands. On 1 May 1941 the Iraqi army invested the British air-base at al-Habbaniya. However, the British without warning began with the air bombardment of the Iraqi forces. After fierce struggle and with the use of RAF and the Transjordan Arab Legion, got the upper hand, and on 31 May the Iraqi army surrendered and the ministers fled out the country.
