The selection of the handwritings of this WWI participant and later Canada emigrant belongs to the few memoirs from the WWI and the first years of the establishing Czechoslovakia. Being peculiar for its narration the memoirs still do have a lot to say to the contemporary reader. The mentioned peculiarities enrich our knowledge on the approach and the perception of the pace of the age in the eyes of a down-to earth member of the Austria-Hungarian Army. He offers us an exclusive evidence of the relationships amongst the members of a multinational army, reflects the atmosphere in it, the torture of the war years as well as the ordinary wishes of the soldiers. Meanwhile his view stands critical not only to the war led by the Austria-Hungarian leadership, but also indirectly it focuses on the issues of the establishing legions and the army of the young Czechoslovak state, or especially the view of one of its Slovak contemporaries.
