The author at the beginning of his study describes the general background of the situation in Hungary forthcoming Emerich Thököli Uprising representing the peak of the anti-Habsburg resistance in the 80’s of the 17‘ the century. He points out to the fact that it was a reaction to the absolutism of the monarch’s Leopold I policy. The author focussed on the situation in the independent royal town of Skalica affected by the uprising. He states that there were 2 phases of the uprising in the city. In its 1st phase (1680 – 1682) the uprising affected the town development only secondarily. Skalica was forced to provide the monarch’s army with carts to transport the material. From the spring of 1682 the army was settled in the town. Due to the effort to pacify the anti-Habsburg rebels the emperor’s court reduced its policy towards Royal Hungary and the evangelic and Calvin’s asked for the recovery of their churches in the town. The second phase of the uprising in Skalica took place in 1683 in connection with the siege of Vienna by the Ottomans. The town suffered considerably from the accommodation of the Emperor’s army, the transport to Moravia and their transport to the battlefi elds against the Ottomans.
