The article of G. Hausner deals with the context of military literature in Hungary in the 17th century. There are three main focuses of the study: firstly it is the development of the opinions of the military in Europe in 17th century, secondly there are the primal specifications of the military literature in Hungary in the century; and finally it is the typology of the contemporary military literature. Th is is an example of a work of high quality providing us with a concise structure of the development of the military in its theoretical level – as a new scientifi c fi eld. It was during the 17th century that the theoretical foundations of the military were built up. The process is concisely presented in the first part of the study. In the second part the author describes the main elements of the literature on military in Hungary, however, it is important to mention the fact that there were no works published then on the theory or the practise of the military. The last part of the study is very interesting as it contains the typology of the military literature: theological literature /sermon/, military directives /military orders: edicts and regulations/, occasional literature /essays and presentations/, handwritten works on the military technique, political works, dealing with the military issue as well as the works focussed on the military tactics and strategy.
