The paper is focused on the activities of the captain of Orava castle, the castle caretaker and cohorts in the course of the 17th and 18th centuries. The aim of this paper is to shed more light on the functions of the landlord’s administrative system, with emphasis on the specific responsibilities directly associated with the provision of Orava Castle’s defences. Instructions issued to clerks by the owners of the Orava fiefdom are used as the main source of this paper. Apart from this information, the paper affords an insight into Orava Castle’s military equipment in the course of the 17th century.
