The author of the paper offers richly documented facts to readers, arranged in a chronological timeline, chronicling the formation of the Polish Independent Carpathian Rifle Brigade in April 1940 and its combat operations well until the brigade’s engagement in pursuing the German and Italian troops after breaking the German blockade of Tobruk as well as in the battle of Gazala in December 1941. It is known that also No. 11 Czechoslovak Infantry Battalion East, led by Lt. Col. Karol Klapálek, participated in the battle of Tobruk in Libya, operating within the formation of the Polish brigade. In processing the material, the author relied on information from specialized publications from Poland, the United Kingdom, and Israel, as well as drew on the published memories of then Brigade Commander General Stanislaw Kopansky.
