The author studies the history of Longobards (also called as Lombards) since their arrival at the middle Danube around 487 to 572. His work stems mainly from Longobardic written sources by comparing them, pointing at their identity and differences. He adds to these sources from the Anglo – Saxon poem Widsith, Frankish chronicles and the work of Byzantine historian Procopius. At the beginning, he describes the victory of Longobards over Heruli in 507 that lead to the rise of power and the rise of the empire. The author follows the fate of the kings from two Longobardic dynasties, the Lething´s, and the Gaus ´s. He focuses in particular on the kings Wacho and Audoin, from which the former won the crown violently and the latter hindered the legitimate heir his access to the throne. On the basis of the sources he studies their origin, family and kin relationships with other royal families and fills in or reconstructs their family trees. He perceives dynasty marriages that build up, confirmed or cemented the alliances among German monarchies as well as the Byzantine empire. Although the Longobards were the last German migrant tribes they were not lagging behind their neighbours in strengthening the royal government and authority. There also were king ´s murders, the fight for power and usurpation. As we can follow in the examples of the kings Wacho and Audoin, a forceful usurpation of the throne breaking common habits were taken beneficiary for the later development of monarchies. Often had it led ambitious kings to the power, who strengthened the empire. Moreover, they expanded their empires.
